How to make a casual lunch table setting

Why do we keep beautiful things stored away, waiting for “special occasions”?This is a question I used to ask myself often.

Growing up, I remember my mom’s delicate plates, cups, and teacups sitting on the highest shelves for years — untouched, admired at a distance, but rarely used.

Waiting for guests, for holidays, or for some moment that could be considered a “special occasion”.

“But for me, I see this differently; I don’t wait for special occasions.
Instead, I create them, and it begins with a table setting.”

Last Saturday night, my husband suggested a menu for our Sunday lunch. It was simple, intimate — just for our little family. And suddenly I thought:

Why not set a beautiful table just for us?

Something casual, intimate.

And I’ll share with you my table setting guide for this casual Sunday Lunch. to help you get inspired.

Because every day is a special occasion to gather around the table, share stories, laugh, and create moments.

For this particular Sunday family lunch, I wanted the table to feel fresh, warm, and welcoming — something that reflected early spring and togetherness.

I used a personalized table runner from Callie Gifts, embroidered with our family initials. Not only did it bring a sense of identity to the table, but it also set the tone for the entire decoration.

When styling a table, I always begin with one hero element. In this case, it was the table runner.

Next, I selected my blue dinner plates to match the colour of the runner. Repeating tones creates harmony, and harmony makes a table feel intentional rather than accidental.

Blue became the hero colour — fresh, calm, and slightly seasonal with the table runner pattern.

To ground the setting, I layered woody-looking charger plates underneath and the Woven Rattan Napkin Rings.

Natural textures add warmth and prevent the table from feeling too polished or rigid.

Then, I incorporated faux and fresh foliage. Greenery instantly brings life to a table setting and subtly hints at the changing seasons. Even a few branches can transform the atmosphere.

For the napkins, I chose white fabric with delicate gold lines. The gold cutlery complemented this detail and added a touch of sophistication.

However, instead of folding the napkin in a formal style, I tied it into a bow. That small choice kept the mood relaxed and casual — because Sunday lunch should feel elegant, but never formal.

And that’s the beauty of intentional table setting: balance.

When we stop saving our beautiful tableware for “someday,” we begin to live differently.

We begin to:

  • Appreciate daily rituals
  • Create meaningful pauses
  • Turn simple meals into shared memories

Let’s romanticize everyday life — especially through intentional hosting at home.

Because gathering around the table is never just about food.

It’s about connection, conversations, laughter, reflections, and sometimes even silence. It’s about feeding our hearts as much as our hunger.

In other words, let’s normalize ordinary special days.

With Love,

Carol
