How to make a Christmas Table look special

How to make a Christmas Table look special

Setting a table is one of my favourite things in the world — especially for Christmas, the coziest time of the year.

There’s something deeply special about gathering around a table during the holidays. Sharing a good meal, slowing down, being present… for me, that’s where the magic truly lives.

This year, my husband and I felt called to do something more intimate. Just our little family — cuddled up on the couch in our PJs, enjoying a delicious meal and a warm, beautiful table.

And even though it’s just the four of us (counting our puppy, Tapioca), that doesn’t mean our Christmas table decor should be any less thoughtful or cozy.

So I created a simple, intimate, and cozy Christmas table decor, made with intention and a lot of love.

Below, I’m sharing my step-by-step process. So you can create a warm, mindful holiday table in your own home.

PS: Creating a cozy Christmas table is just one part of how I love to decorate for the holidays. If you enjoy slow, intentional decor with handmade touches, you may also love my DIY gingerbread house Christmas decor. Where I share how I styled my fireplace with warmth and nostalgia.

Table of Contents

Before touching any decor, I always start with a mental (or quick paper) sketch. This helps you to know what to put on the Christmas table.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this a brunch, lunch, or dinner table?
  • How many people will sit here?
  • Do I want it more cozy, elegant, playful, or minimal?
  • What objects/ things represent the theme?
  • What do I already have at home that I could use?

After all those questions are answered, you can sketch the idea on the paper (draw and write all the details)

This small planning step helps avoid overwhelm and unnecessary purchases — and makes styling feel intentional from the start.

To keep your Christmas table decor cohesive and elevated, choose:

  • 1 base colour ( usually neutral, but not necessarily)
  • 1–3 main colours
  • 1- 2 accent colour

What are good colour combinations for Christmas?

For this Christmas table, I chose:

  • White is the base colour
  • Red and pink are the main colours
  • Touches of warm green to balance the palette
  • Subtle gold accents for warmth and glow

“A simple colour palette makes your table feel elegant, calm, and beautifully put together.”

Christmas Table Decor

The base layer gives structure to your Christmas table decor.

Start with:

  • Tablecloth or table runner: I used the white tablecloth I have.
  • Placemats or charger plates: I chose my red and white striped charger plates to set the Christmas mood.
  • Chair arrangement (design, colours, pillow, etc.): For the chairs, I mixed what I already had: I kept my black chairs, added two from another table, and styled them with pillows to soften and elevate the look.

You can build your base layer with:

This is the foundation that makes everything else shine.

Creating height brings life and dimension to your Christmas table.

I layered:

✨Play with different heights, but always make sure guests can see each other comfortably.

These layered details help tell the “story” of your Christmas table.

Now it’s time to layer in your dinnerware.

I love mixing pieces I already own with something fresh. For this setup, I used:

These simple, intentional choices instantly make the table feel warm, festive, and refined.

This beautiful, versatile candle holder deserves its own moment 🤍

You can style it in different ways and at different heights, making it perfect for layering.

The soft texture adds depth and warmth to the table — one of those pieces that quietly elevates the entire decor.

I’m already thinking about all the other colours available so I can use them in different table settings. 🙂

This is where the magic really happens.

For this table, I added:

  • Garland with soft lights around the window
  • Small bows tied on the wine glasses
  • Napkins folded like envelopes, finished with a leaf

✨You can also add a handwritten note or place the cutlery inside the napkin fold.

Tiny details create a big emotional impact.

This is how you make a Christmas table look special.

“Christmas table decor isn’t just about how it looks — it’s about how it feels.”

Add something thoughtful:

🤎A handwritten note. My daughter wrote the names for our Christmas brunch last year.

🤎Last Christmas, I placed a small chocolate bear on every seat as a little treat.

🤎A personal detail for each guest. This Thanksgiving, I made gift wrap as a table cover and wrote the name of each person, along with a space where they could write what they’re thankful for.

🤎A handcrafted item, like I made the napkin ring for the Thanksgiving Table decor.

That’s how a table becomes a memory.

All the products I used.

To make things easy for you, I curated everything I used in one place: Charger plates, centerpieces, dinnerware, flatware, and more 🤍
